I hope everyone is as excited as I am that the Grand Prize Drawing is almost here! It’s been so much fun to work with all of our inspiring Community Partners and with the Ticket Purchasers but now it’s time for the real fun.
We are partnering with California Parenting Institute to hold our Grand Prize Drawing at their Annual Benefit, 4aCHILD, at the Rodney Strong Vineyard in Healdsburg, up in Sonoma County, CA. Not only will we be holding our drawing but there will also be a live and silent auction, live music, and plenty of wine and food. Read more about the event at www.4-a-child.org.

Thanks to Josephine Ma, Fund Development Director for Self-Help Elderly, for providing this great success story for us this Monday morning. – Gretchen
Ms. D suffered from bouts of depression and anxiety. Without family in the Bay Area, Ms. D often went through long periods of isolation without visitors. That all changed when CR, a trained volunteer with Self-Help for the Elderly, began visiting Ms. D twice a week. With a smiling face to look forward to, Ms. D now smiles back! She eagerly recounts stories of her childhood and upbringing in China. On CR’s scheduled visits, Mrs. D says she can’t wait for her arrival.
As a volunteer, CR gives the greatest gift of all – her time. When asked about her volunteerism. She is very humble, saying that it is she who learns from the seniors, not the other way around. “I thought it would be very easy, but then I realized one key doesn’t open every lock. Each person is different. I have learned that with patience, very person will tell you their story. Some people are easy to reach, some hard. Patience always works”, says CR.
Self-Help is dedicated to our seniors, volunteers are dedicated to Self-Help and many seniors enjoy the help of Self-Help’s league of social service volunteers! Self-Help Elderly thanks the Grants For Good Foundation and SF Bay Raffle for their grants.

Celebration
The Network’s celebration in May produced some very creative projects from our participants for our Older Americans Month contest. Everyone did well with representing the 2011 “Connecting the Community” theme. Voted this year’s winner was SteppingStone Mabini ADHC. (See photo).
Advocacy
You may have heard or read that Governor Brown has proposed to eliminate Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) as a Medi-Cal optional benefit. Our legislative advocates Senators Mark Leno and Leland Yee and Assemblymembers Fiona Ma and Tom Ammiano are fighting hard to save ADHC under a new waiver program called KAFI (Keeping Adults Free from Institutions). In San Francisco, this means nearly 1,000 patients may lose these important community-based programs that help them continue living independently in their own home. Funds received from the Grants for Good Foundation helps the Network in this unexpected increased need for advocacy.
Dancing
The Network’s 3rd annual Dance2Care “relaxed” dance-a-thon is August 14th. Come and enjoy dancing (individual free-style or partner) or listening to the Soulful 70’s classics. There is a group line dance lesson on the “Seventies Strut” and performances. See details on the Network’s website.
We are extremely appreciative to be a community partner with the Grants for Good Foundation. The SF Greater Bay Area Dream Home Raffle benefits the San Francisco Adult Day Services Network and the frail seniors and adults with disabilities we serve.

I’ve been seeing this story on the news lately and when I saw our Community Partner B.O.S.S. posted it on facebook I had to share it as well. What a great story and truly what Grants For Good is all about; helping others, help themselves.
